On April 24, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) will host its annual seminar “Sustainable packaging: from design to recycling 2025”, taking place at the LBTU Assembly Hall in Jelgava, starting at 10:00 a.m. The event will focus on current challenges and opportunities related to sustainable packaging solutions, as well as how businesses and the public are adapting to new regulations promoting compliance with European Union standards and reducing waste volumes in Latvia.
The seminar aims to raise awareness of the necessary changes for companies and society to align with new regulations and adopt sustainable practices that lead to more efficient resource use and reduced environmental pollution.
The event will feature experts from the environmental and packaging sectors, including representatives from the Ministry of Climate and Energy, “Latvijas Zaļais punkts” (Green Dot Latvia), the Latvian Packaging Association, LBTU, SIA “Eco Baltia vide”, and others. Key topics to be addressed include:

The reality and potential of plastic packaging recycling – strategies for ensuring high-quality and efficient recycling in Latvia;
Packaging diversity: a challenge or an opportunity? – tackling the sustainability challenges of various packaging materials;
A roadmap to a plastic pollution-free society by 2030 – outlining a vision and practical steps for both businesses and consumers.
Additional discussions will cover packaging quality control, recyclable vs. non-recyclable plastic packaging, and practical strategies for businesses to comply with new regulations.
The seminar is open to packaging manufacturers, retailers, waste management professionals, environmental specialists, and all interested parties. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required by April 16 due to limited seating.
The seminar is organized within the framework of the LIFE Integrated Project “Waste as Resources in Latvia – Promoting Regional Sustainability and Circularity through the Waste as Resources Concept” (LIFE Waste To Resources IP, LIFE20 IPE/LV/000014), co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme and the State Regional Development Agency.
