Sustainability

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) is dedicated to integrating sustainability principles across all areas of its work—fostering a modern academic and research environment where innovation and science contribute to solving local and global challenges, while ensuring sustainability is embedded in university governance.

LBTU has developed Sustainability Policy to outline principles, directions, and priorities that support the achievement of the goals set out in the LBTU Development Strategy 2023 - 2027. The policy reflects LBTU’s commitment to promoting the sustainable use of resources and development across research, studies, lifelong learning, and governance—while taking into account the needs of future generations.

The Sustainability Policy is aligned with Sustainable Development Strategy of  Latvia until 2030, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the European Green Deal. This alignment reinforces LBTU’s role in advancing sustainability at both national and international levels.

LBTU Sustainable Development Principles:

• Responsible and sustainable use of resources, reducing consumption and promoting efficient resource management,
• Strengthening environmental and climate responsibility by reducing environmental impacts and adapting to climate change,
• Promoting social inclusion and fairness by ensuring equal opportunities and a respectful attitude towards everyone,
• Transparent, ethical and accountable governance as the basis for a credible and open university,
• Highlighting the importance of science, innovation and technology as a driver for sustainable solutions,
• Building cooperation and partnerships with local and international partners to jointly tackle sustainability challenges,
• Providing a safe, healthy and supportive working environment for University staff and students,
• Active involvement in global sustainability initiatives and international platforms to promote a positive impact on a wider scale.
