The Research Laboratory of Biotechnology of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU), one of the core research unit of the university, has successfully retained its accreditation in accordance with the international standard LVS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

The accreditation surveillance procedure was performed by the national accreditation body – the State Agency “Latvian National Accreditation Bureau” – which officially confirmed the laboratory’s continued accreditation on June 26, 2025. The scope of accreditation includes physical and physico-chemical testing of animal feed, fertilizers, and substrates.

Functioning under the supervision of the LBTU Vice-Rector for Science, the Research Laboratory of Biotechnology plays an important role in supporting the university’s research activities. The laboratory performs testing services, provides scientific evaluations, maintains the national gene bank for agricultural animal genetic resources, and conducts a wide range of scientific research in the fields of biotechnology and biosystems science.

The Research Laboratory of Biotechnology was established in 2016 through the consolidation of the Laboratory of Agronomic Analysis and the Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Microbiology. In 2019, it expanded further with the establishment of the Smart Technologies Division.

The laboratory now consists of four structural units: Division of Agronomic Analysis, Division of Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Division of Smart Technologies Division, and the Gene Bank. All samples for testing are received at the Agronomic Analysis Division, located at 1 Strazdu Street, Jelgava.

According to Vice-Rector for Science Gatis Vītols: "The reaccreditation of LBTU’s Research Laboratory of Biotechnology confirms its high quality of work, in full compliance with both national and international standards. This laboratory is not only essential for conducting high-level scientific research at the university but also provides high-quality laboratory services within Latvia."

The accreditation commission acknowledged the laboratory for maintaining a consistent high standard of quality and demonstrating the necessary competence in accordance with the requirements of LVS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017

This reaccreditation affirms the laboratory’s professionalism and reliability, reinforcing its position as a key contributor to both Latvia’s agricultural and biotechnology sectors, as well as the broader scientific community.
