From 2025 to 2027, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) will represent Latvia in the European Student Card Initiative (ESCI) Champion Team. This is a prestigious honor that affirms LBTU’s sustainable and innovative approach to the digitalization of student mobility processes, contributing to the digital transformation of higher education in Latvia and across Europe.

ESCI Champions are higher education institutions and organizations that have made substantial contributions to the digitalization of administrative processes related to individual mobility. These institutions serve as examples of best practices and actively participate in testing new solutions and functionalities, thereby promoting digital transformation in European higher education.

In June 2025, the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC), in collaboration with Erasmus+ National agencies, selected the new ESCI Champions. The selected champions include higher education institutions and student unions from across the European Education Area that have demonstrated outstanding implementation of ESCI.

In this role, they will represent the ESCI community, whose energy and dedication were reflected in the high quality of applications submitted in each of the three ESCI Champions categories:

  • Implementation of Erasmus Without Paper (EWP),

  • Implementation of the European Student Card (ESC),

  • Champions of Excellence, which demonstrate exceptional implementation of both ESC and EWP.

LBTU was recognized as an ESCI Champion in the category of Implementation of Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) – in 2024, 100% of Erasmus+ student mobility agreements at the university were paperless.

The Erasmus+ National Agency – the State Education Development Agency – expresses its gratitude to the previous ESCI Champion teams from Latvia: Daugavpils University, University of Latvia, and Riga Technical University, which fulfilled this important role from 2023 until June 2025.

More information about the ESCI Champions and their contributions to digitalization is available on the European Commission’s website:
