Alfebin Ubaidulla Vadayil is one of this year’s most outstanding graduates of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). He was born in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, but spent his childhood and school years in the state of Kerala, India. He completed his secondary education at Emirates Future International Academy in Abu Dhabi, where social sciences were already his favorite subject. This early interest laid the foundation for his future academic path. Alfebin earned a Red Diploma of Excellence in the master’s study program “Sociology of Organizations and Public Administration” at the Faculty of Economics and Social Development (ESAF), graduating with a weighted average grade of 9.688.

Sociology – A Conscious Choice and Personal Calling

Before beginning his sociology studies at LBTU, Alfebin went through a personal journey of discovery. After graduating from high school, he tried several other study programs at different universities, but none of them truly inspired him. A turning point came when he attended a sociology lecture by chance – it spoke to him on a personal level and gave him a clear direction: this was the path to follow.

"While searching on Google for programs related to sociology and public administration, I came across LBTU and this study course. I contacted the International Cooperation Office, which responded quickly and was very supportive. I completed the entire application process independently, and it was really easy. I arrived in Latvia in 2020," Alfebin recalls.

After completing his bachelor’s studies, he immediately continued with a master’s degree to deepen his knowledge and strengthen his understanding of sociology.

Master’s Thesis on Student Expectations and Reality

At the end of his studies, Alfebin chose a thesis topic closely connected to both his professional interests and personal experience – student expectations and reality at LBTU. Alongside his studies, he worked as a marketing analyst, skillfully combining theoretical knowledge with practical application.

"The aim of my master’s thesis was to identify and analyze students’ expectations and determine whether they align with their actual experience at the university. No such research had been done at LBTU before, so I hope my study will help the university better understand student needs," says Alfebin.

One of his conclusions was that LBTU students generally have realistic expectations, which are largely met. His research also revealed interesting differences between local and international students – for example, Latvian students tend to expect more supervision from professors, while international students place greater importance on integration and living conditions in the dormitories.

Gratitude to Inspiring Professors

Alfebin fondly recalls his time at LBTU: "The university environment, study program, and professors truly inspired me. All the lecturers were knowledgeable and supportive, and I especially want to thank those who taught in the sociology program. They not only shared their knowledge but also motivated and encouraged us throughout."

He extends special gratitude to his master’s thesis supervisor, Professor Dr. phil. Signe Dobelniece, for her outstanding guidance, detailed feedback, and human approach during the thesis writing process.

Latvia – A Place Where Balance Was Found

During his studies in Jelgava, Alfebin successfully balanced academic and professional commitments with a fulfilling daily life. "Latvia is a calm and beautiful country with well-developed infrastructure. Jelgava pleasantly surprised me as a great place to live," he shares.

Despite a busy schedule, he made time for sports, friendships, and his passion for football – especially supporting his favorite team, Liverpool FC.

Advice for Future International Students

Alfebin believes that studies at LBTU are practically oriented and highly applicable to real life. For prospective international students, he recommends being well-prepared for independent living: "Since you’ll be far from your family, it’s important to learn time management and basic cooking skills in advance – it will significantly ease your adaptation and everyday life in Latvia."

Alfebin Ubaidulla Vadayil is a vivid example of how determination, conscious choices, and a clear sense of direction can lead to outstanding results – both academically and professionally. His story is an inspiration not only to other students but to anyone seeking their true path.
