In May, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) in Jelgava will host three international scientific conferences, which will collectively cover the full cycle of sustainable development – from natural resources and agriculture to engineering technologies, food systems, and socio-economic processes. The events will bring together researchers from Latvia and abroad, industry representatives, and policymakers to discuss innovation, resource management, food quality and safety, as well as societal development and consumer behaviour.

From 13 to 14 May, the 32nd International Scientific Conference "Research for Rural Development" will take place. Its themes cover a broad range of topics: biosciences – sustainable and climate-friendly management of natural resources (including agricultural sciences such as crop production and animal breeding, veterinary medicine, food safety, forestry, etc.); engineering sciences – technologies and innovations for sustainable and climate-neutral resource management (including agricultural and environmental engineering, landscape architecture, water management, food science, information and communication technologies, wood processing, etc.); and social sciences – research and governance for sustainable bioeconomy and smart territorial development (including agricultural economics, regional development, spatial planning, education, etc.).

From 14 to 15 May, the 19th Baltic Conference on Food Science and Technology "FoodBalt 2026" will be held under the theme “Resilient Food Systems: From Primary Production to Consumption.” The conference will focus on current trends and innovations in food science and technology, valorisation of co-products and use of non-traditional ingredients, reduction of food waste, as well as economic and agricultural aspects within a sustainable food chain. It will also address consumer preferences and behaviour, along with challenges in nutrition science.

From 27 to 29 May, the international scientific conference "Engineering for Rural Development" will take place. The conference will cover research topics related to agricultural machinery, renewable and traditional energy, greenhouse gas emissions and waste management, agro-engineering technologies and mechanisms, control systems, materials science, transport and logistics, fuels and technical fluids, education in engineering and technology, as well as other related research areas.

The Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies is a multidisciplinary university offering more than 50 study programmes in biosciences, engineering, and social sciences at all levels of higher education – bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies. The university’s work in higher education and science is characterised by a focus on the sustainable use of natural resources and societal development. LBTU researchers conduct studies and develop innovations aimed at improving quality of life, health, and longevity. Knowledge gained through research is transferred to new professionals who choose to study at the university.
