Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute (MeKA)
The Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute (abbreviated as MeKA) is a commercial company established by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the Joint Stock Company “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM), and the Latvian Forest Industry Federation.
MeKA’s objective is to bring together the resources of higher education institution and industry stakeholders to enhance the competitiveness of the forest sector in the Baltic region.
Main areas of activity include implementation of research and development projects, testing services and applied research in the field of wood and related materials, and continuing education and support for professional development.
MeKA conducts applied research on wood materials and products, funded by both public programs and private partnerships. Innovative products and technologies are developed in cooperation with companies from the wood processing and related industries, supporting technology transfer and integration into production processes. Research is carried out by MeKA’s in-house experts and in collaboration with national and international partners.
MeKA`s Testing Laboratory provides testing services for wood and wood-based products, catering to both private individuals and companies in Latvia and abroad. While the primary focus is on wood materials, the laboratory’s technical capabilities and expertise enable testing of a broader range of materials and products.
In addition, MeKA operates as a non-formal adult education institution, offering a variety of training programs, seminars, and courses for different target audiences — including managers and employees of woodworking companies, industry specialists, and representatives from related sectors.
