INT36 From Nutrient Capture to Forest Vitality, Nutri2Forest

Project objective:
The aim of the Nutri2Forest project is to pilot a sustainable nature-based solutions for phosphorus recovery from agricultural and forestry drainage waters, following circular economy principles and using modular sorbent filters that will be integrated into existing drainage systems (such as ditches and sedimentation basins) before the runoff reaches natural water bodies. The phosphorus-enriched filter material is intended to be reused as a soil improver in degraded or nutrient-poor forest soils after its use in the filtration system.
Project results:
- 4 pilot sites selected in Latvia and Finland, reflecting agricultural and forestry drainage conditions typical of the Central Baltic region.
- 4 phosphorus capture prototypes installed in existing drainage infrastructure and tested under real field conditions.
- Demonstrated reuse of phosphorus-enriched filter materials as soil improvers in degraded and nutrient-poor forest soils.
- Environmental and economic benefits, as well as the potential for phosphorus circulation and resource reuse, assessed using monitoring data, life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis.
- Recommendations and an action plan developed to support the wider implementation of phosphorus recovery solutions in the region.

The total project budget is EUR 1,415,157.32, of which 80% (EUR 1,132,125.85) is financed by the ERDF.
The LBTU budget share amounts to EUR 313,636.00, of which 80% (EUR 250,908.80) is financed by the ERDF.
