Successful implementation of the Erasmus+ BIP Project "Media Literacy for Future Leaders"
The Institute of Social and Humanitarian Sciences at the Faculty of Economics and Social Development of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) has successfully concluded the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) project titled “Media Literacy for Future Leaders”. The project aimed to develop students’ core media literacy skills, enhancing their critical approach to information, ability to analyse media content, create high-quality communication outputs, and operate effectively in today’s digital and international information environment.
Special emphasis was placed on critical thinking and intercultural communication, equipping future leaders with the tools to understand the complexities of information exchange and identify misinformation. Participants strengthened their skills in media content development and analysis, gained awareness of the unique characteristics of AI-generated content, and improved their international collaboration and networking competencies.
The project brought together students from LBTU and its partner institutions: Hochschule Offenburg (Germany), Estonian University of Life Sciences, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), and South East European University (North Macedonia). An international team of lecturers, including five faculty members from LBTU’s Faculty of Economics and Social Development and invited guest lecturers, led the program: Professor Edlira Palloshi Disha from North Macedonia, Professor of Media Studies Ursula Doliva, and Associate Professor Magdalena Sidłowska from Poland.
The programme commenced with an online introductory seminar on 31 March, followed by an intensive in-person study week in Jelgava from 7 to 11 April. This week included lectures, seminars, hands-on workshops, and a rich cultural program. Participants explored cultural and historical landmarks in Jelgava and Riga, and visited the Rundāle Palace.
The project concluded on 25 April, when students presented their final work at the international conference “Students on Their Way to Science”, highlighting their acquired knowledge in media literacy, information perception, and communication.
Student presentations covered a wide range of topics — from the analysis of fake news dissemination influenced by technology to the role of digital etiquette in intercultural communication. Some explored the importance of critical thinking in today's information-saturated environment, while others analysed podcasting as an effective form of media communication.
At the end of the course, participants received academic assessments, allowing them to transfer ECTS credits to equivalent courses at their home institutions. This type of international study programme offers students the valuable opportunity to study alongside peers from other European countries, share experiences, and gain new perspectives.
Students expressed high appreciation for the academic and personal value of their time in Jelgava. One participant remarked:
“I would like to sincerely thank you for the wonderful experience during the Blended Intensive Programme in Latvia. It was an incredibly enriching opportunity both academically and personally. I am truly grateful for the chance to participate, to meet inspiring peers, and to learn from outstanding professors. The organisation and hospitality throughout the programme were exceptional. I deeply appreciate all the efforts made to create such a memorable experience.”
