The Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) Lifelong Learning Centre is continuing the implementation of its educational project titled “Engineer’s Start: Discover, Explore, Choose”, which has now entered its second month. The initiative engages 50 secondary school students from across Latvia, introducing them to a wide range of engineering disciplines — from civil engineering to food technology and agriculture. Through this program, participants gain insight into nine different fields, supporting them in making informed decisions about their future careers.

Following the introductory learning sessions, participants will have the opportunity to visit companies for several days, gaining first-hand experience in real working environments. They will shadow engineers at various levels and engage in practical, hands-on activities, thereby deepening their understanding of the professions.

Ilvita Švāne, Head of the LBTU Lifelong Learning Centre, explains the motivation and value behind the project:

"Choosing a future profession is one of the most important — and often one of the most difficult — decisions in a young person’s life. We have observed that high dropout rates among university students, both at LBTU and other institutions are frequently linked to a lack of understanding about the chosen field of study."

"For several years, we have nurtured the idea of a project that would allow young people to 'try on' various professions, explore the specifics of different fields, and discover the opportunities they offer for the future. 'Engineer’s Start: Discover, Explore, Choose' fully delivers on that vision. We provide both theoretical and practical training, organize company visits, and work with students to develop their first scientific research papers in their chosen area of interest."

"By completing the full cycle of the project, students gain a clearer and more personal understanding of various professions, as well as experience-based knowledge that helps them determine which specific field might suit them best," adds Ms. Švāne.

This year, participants are introduced to a broad spectrum of engineering fields, including:

Environmental and water management,

Food product technology,

Wood processing and forestry,

Agriculture and information technology,

Design and crafts,

Construction and energy.

In its first year, the project involves 50 students from across Latvia. However, an expansion is planned for future editions to accommodate more participants and further promote awareness of engineering career pathways.
