Topical issues in agriculture, environmental science, engineering, and social sciences brought together a wide international audience in May at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU), which hosted the 31st annual international scientific conference "Research for Rural Development 2025". This long-standing tradition has become one of the most important platforms in the Baltic region for researchers, doctoral students, students, and industry professionals to collaboratively address rural development challenges and discuss the latest scientific advancements.

The aim of the conference was to promote interdisciplinary and international collaboration among researchers, provide opportunities to present the latest research, and foster dialogue between science and society regarding sustainable development opportunities in regional contexts. The event underscored LBTU’s role as a key player not only within Latvia but also in the international scientific community, capable of bringing together like-minded professionals and facilitating practically oriented solutions.

The conference welcomed over 250 in-person participants in Jelgava from 15 countries, including Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Ukraine, and India. Additionally, approximately 150 researchers participated remotely or in hybrid format via digital platforms. Over the course of three days, more than 100 oral presentations and over 40 poster presentations were delivered, covering a broad range of scientific disciplines.

The conference opening and plenary session were held in the LBTU Silver Hall. Speeches were given by LBTU Vice-Rector for Science Gatis Vītols, alongside international guest lecturers who highlighted the critical role of science in achieving sustainable rural development. Emphasis was also placed on LBTU’s international collaborations and its significance in generating innovative solutions.

Social Sciences: Economics and Education

The social sciences section focused on the economic factors influencing regional development, public engagement, and the sustainability of education. Research topics included lifelong learning, opportunities for youth in rural areas, and the impact of digital transformation on education accessibility. Researchers from the Baltic States and Scandinavia actively contributed to the discussions.

Engineering Sciences: Environmental, Food, and Technological Solutions

In the engineering sciences section, research was presented on environmental engineering, food technology, geodesy, landscape architecture, information and communication technologies, and more. Special attention was given to the impact of climate change on agricultural infrastructure and technological solutions for sustainable production. Innovations in digital agriculture and precision technologies were also key topics of focus.

Life Sciences: Agriculture, Forestry, and Veterinary Medicine

In the life sciences section, key areas of focus included forestry, soil sustainability, animal husbandry, and animal health. Veterinary researchers shared insights on disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, and animal welfare. The studies presented included both experimental data from Latvia and comparative analyses involving international perspectives.

A poster session was held in the LBTU Aula, where early-stage researchers showcased their scientific work and ideas. This session provided doctoral and master’s students with valuable professional feedback and networking opportunities with experienced colleagues. Meanwhile, online participants were able to engage via interactive hybrid sections hosted in specially equipped facilities, ensuring an inclusive and accessible experience for the international audience.

The "Research for Rural Development 2025" conference once again reaffirmed the vital role of science in the development of rural areas, mitigation of climate change, societal well-being, and economic growth. As the organizer, LBTU continues to build a strong bridge between academic excellence and practical application, encouraging new projects, research directions, and sustainable solutions at both regional and global levels.
