LBTU to Research Climate-Resilient Urban Greenery Development
Researchers from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU), in collaboration with the Lithuanian College of Engineering (Lietuvos inžinerijos kolegija), have launched the international project UrbanGreenAdapt (“Enhancing Urban Resilience with Climate Adaptive Green Space Planning in Latvia and Lithuania”). The project is being implemented under the Interreg Latvia–Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Programme (Project No. LL-00273).
Latvia and Lithuania face similar challenges in implementing EU environmental policies, particularly in developing urban green infrastructure and introducing climate-resilient greenery. However, municipalities and professionals often lack the necessary knowledge and skills to apply these sustainable approaches in local planning and construction.
The project aims to strengthen the capacity of municipalities and industry experts by providing research-based knowledge on climate-adaptive planting and green infrastructure integration. Activities will include research on current practices, development of a specialized training program, and creation of methodological materials and a handbook for local professionals and students.
A pilot area with climate-resilient plantings will be created in Jelgava for public education, along with animated infographic videos. An innovative outcome of the project is the development of a plant assortment adapted to urban environments and climate change—an area previously underexplored in both countries.
This initiative will contribute to greener, more resilient cities and increase public awareness of the importance of sustainable greenery in urban planning.
