Institute of Horticulture

Horticulture

Institute of Horticulture is a leading scientific institution dedicated to fruit, berry, and vegetable research. Under the jurisdiction of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the institute plays a central role in advancing horticultural science in the Baltic region. The institute focuses on developing new, climate-resistant plant varieties and finding more sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods

Scientists of the institute conduct research in plant genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, with a focus on improving plant resistance to diseases, pests, and environmental stress. Their breeding programs have resulted in numerous apple, cherry, berry, and lilac cultivars adapted to northern growing conditions. Modern labs enable research in plant physiology, microbiological safety, and post-harvest quality, supporting innovations in both fresh produce and value-added food products.

One of the institute's scientific priorities is the preservation and utilization of genetic resources, including Latvia’s national collections of fruit and ornamental plants. This ensures biodiversity is maintained for future breeding and adaptation needs. Researchers also lead national and EU projects focused on climate-smart agriculture, zero-waste production, and circular bioeconomy models.

Through international collaboration and scientific publishing, the Institute of Horticulture is strengthening Latvia’s position in global horticultural research. It serves as a hub for knowledge transfer - offering expertise, training, and data to growers, industry professionals, students, and policymakers—ensuring that science remains rooted in practical impact.

Directions of the Institute of Horticulture’s activities:

  • Research in the sectors of horticulture and healthy food.

  • Conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources.

  • Promoting the integrated development of industry, science and education.

  • Promoting the visibility of the institute and the horticultural industry.
